It’s an echo of “God opposes the proud and gives grace to the humble.” Claiming God status is not what the church fathers were talking about. They knew better, as has been shown in these quotations.JustinPickerelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07249259828890183571noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6086833995941525990.post-561778459634882682014-09-23T21:38:42.391-04:002014-09-23T21:38:42.391-04:00Boniface

However, I don't see how you can say that adoption is not that closely related, since St. Athanasius specifically mentions adoption in this context, and since adoption has to do with man becoming a son of god by grace.

Justin-

I was also a bit mistaken in my earlier comment...this is related to theosis, but not the same thing. Theosis is a more mystical idea, but it is related to this I believe.Bonifacehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10672810254075072214noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6086833995941525990.post-80983499975189331822011-02-16T22:11:50.093-05:002011-02-16T22:11:50.093-05:00Actually, there are a couple of problems here Boni...Actually, there are a couple of problems here Boniface. First of all, the Fathers of the Church for the most part do not base divinization on the passage of Peter that you cite, but instead on Psalm 82: 6 although the passage from Peter is mentioned in the later Fathers. Also, adoption is not that closely related to divinization...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6086833995941525990.post-68435373944543318082011-02-14T11:40:39.689-05:002011-02-14T11:40:39.689-05:00Yes, this is theosis, I believe.Yes, this is theosis, I believe.Bonifacehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10672810254075072214noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6086833995941525990.post-13562207728028197022011-02-13T22:48:03.832-05:002011-02-13T22:48:03.832-05:00Is what you are talking about what the Orthodox wo...Is what you are talking about what the Orthodox would call "theosis"? I know an Eastern Rite Catholic priest who said that the "Transforming Union" is the same thing, only that is how a Latin Rite Catholic would call it. He argues that "transforming union" is a better phrase because unlike "theosis" which can easily be misinterpreted into a sort of pantheism, transforming union can't really be twisted into that. All in all a great and informative post you have here.JDhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07062221333467776105noreply@blogger.com
