But, Anonymous, I do not engage in long, private, discussions, so if you choose to respond to this, it will be posted.

All your arguments (Anonymous) were simply based on talking about how bad it is in places where immigrants come from and what dangers they go through to get here. In your final post (which I did not publish), you finally admitted the meanings of the Hebrew words in the article were accurate, though you still "disagreed" with the author of the article, saying you didn't think immigration was enforced back in those days, when the whole point of the article was to show that it was.

The fact that immigrants have it bad is no justification for illegally entering another country, just like the fact that one is poor is no justification to rob a bank.Bonifacehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10672810254075072214noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6086833995941525990.post-83033738241340219172012-03-17T23:15:46.366-04:002012-03-17T23:15:46.366-04:00Anonymous,
In regard to the Holy Family, you are m...Anonymous,

In regard to the Holy Family, you are missing the point that they were protected by God from being discovered and arrested, because of the mission he had for him. But illegal immigrants are not protected by God in that way. Scripture does not say that they were discovered by Egyptian soldiers as foreigners. Ancient civilizations did not have police forces as we know them, they only had soldiers. God could have allowed the Holy Family to be arrested to suit his purposes, and it would not necessarily have been a sin on the part of the Egyptian soldiers. Also, there is a difference between allowing a few foreigners to reside in the country for a short time, and allowing tens of thousands of foreigners to stay.
Every nation has good reason to want to preserve and protect itself from being overwhelmed with foreigners. People in all nations want to preserve and protect their cultures and social environment, and these things involve race. The ancient Hebrews were bound together under the laws given to them by God. They were a church. But the United States is not bound together by a strong Catholic faith. It is not a church. And so it is impossible to persuade most Americans to be accepting and charitable towards illegal aliens as the Catholic Church is.Anthony Puccettinoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6086833995941525990.post-55469963798483622552012-03-16T19:50:25.670-04:002012-03-16T19:50:25.670-04:00Justin & Anonymous-
Yes, whatever my opinion ...Justin & Anonymous-

Yes, whatever my opinion on illegal immigration is (and in case you are wondering, I think it is out of control) - that is not the subject of this post. This post is examining the meaning of certain Hebrew words in a historical context and attempting to show how these words are misused. Going on about how illegal immigrants work hard and have good reasons to come here is completely irrelevant to the question of what these Hebrew words mean in a historical context, nothing more, nothing less.

If you fly off the handle any time immigration is even mentioned, even in a scholarly context like this where we are discussing the meaning of words in 2nd millennium BC Palestine, it shows the degree to which supporters of unregulated illegal immigration are themselves overly touchy and insecure about the subject.

Let's not call people hypocrites and racists because they want to know what words in the Bible mean.Bonifacehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10672810254075072214noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6086833995941525990.post-20211600417038173852012-03-16T19:38:59.608-04:002012-03-16T19:38:59.608-04:00You are still not addressing the argument of the o...You are still not addressing the argument of the original poster. He asked two questions which you have yet to even attempt to address:

1. What about the argument is stupid?
2. Do you deny that the Hebrew words mean what he says that they mean?

Personally I think what he (the author of the post) is trying to do (and I could be wrong) is to show that many of the arguments justifying illegal immigration and an open borders policy can not easily be justified by reading holy writ in the context it is supposed to be read in.

Personally I don't think you can figure out how the original poster feels about immigration policy based on his post. His points are valid. The Bible must be read in context and to read the passges he mentions in the proper context does not allow for their use by some for the justification of the massive ILLEGAL immigration that has been happening in this nation.

One thing I have never understood is why some people think it is criminal for a nation to want to enforce it's laws. Illegal is illegal, period, close the book. This doesn't mean that these people don't have honest heartfelt reasons for wanting to come here nor does it mean that we shouldn't as a nation do something to make it easier for people but I personally resent to no end foreign nationals coming here to my country against the law and then treating folks like me like I'm some racist criminal for wanting them to respect the laws of the land.JDhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07062221333467776105noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6086833995941525990.post-37974944302833210062012-03-15T20:03:30.143-04:002012-03-15T20:03:30.143-04:00Woah, comments like that just leave you wordless, ...Woah, comments like that just leave you wordless, don't they?
