Hey everyone! Blessed Feast of Christ the King in the traditional calendar. I hope you all are well. I've been very busy and have had less time to write than I would like, so I don't have much new for you this Sunday. I do have several essays in the works though, which I hope to be getting out shortly.
In the meantime, I'd like to direct you towards some recent essays that have been added to the Unam Sanctam website which may have flown under your radar:
The Killing of Fr. Baldassare Santi: A priest is murdered by Italian nationalists in Perugia in 1860. Leo XIII, as Archbishop of Perugia, tries in vain to save his life.
Summis desiderantes affectibus of Innocent VIII: The text of a 1484 papal bull in which Pope Innocent VIII mentions incubi and succubi and laments that certain regions of Germany are seeing an increase in Satanic activity, including people consorting sexually with demons.
Liturgical Handwarmers: Medieval clerics celebrating Mass in the winter used heated metallic balls to keep their hands from freezing during the liturgy.Salvation of Righteous Pagans in the Poem Erkenwald: A medieval English poem hypothesizes about the salvation of righteous pagans. Contains a full translation of the poem and commentary.
The Miracle of Christopher Columbus: Columbus's son narrates a miracle that Columbus allegedly performed on his fourth voyage in 1502.
The Justinian Code and the Emergence of Clerical Marriage in Byzantium: Lengthy article on how the Byzantine Empire came to embrace a married and sexually active clergy in the years between 567 and 692.
The Vision of Laisren: A seventh century Irish saint has a vision of hell.
Sunday Christ Images: Medieval churches in the west discouraged Christians from working on Sunday through the use of "Sunday Christ" images, depictions of Jesus being wounded by the implements of labor.
Segregated Catholic Schools in New Orleans: Between the Third Council of Baltimore (1884) and the Civil Rights era, the Archdiocese of New Orleans struggles to find a way to accomodate the educational needs of black Catholics in the midst of the culture of segregation.
Supporting the Church in Anglo-Saxon England: Brief study on the various offerings through which the Anglo-Saxons supported their local churches.
Sister Blandina vs. the Public School: Frontier missionary and Servant of God Sister Blandia Segale (1850-1941) takes on the authorities in multiple American jurisdictions to keep her sisters teaching in the public schools.
Capital Punishment in the Papal States: The story of the death penalty's application in the papal states from the Renaissance to their dissolution in 1870.
I have also been blessed to have three articles published this year at New Liturgical Movement on the 1970s reform of the Sacrament of Penance:
Concilium's Attack on Confession (Part 1): "A Crisis Moment"
Concilium's Attack on Confession (Part 2): Guilt as a Social Construct
Concilium's Attack on Confession (Part 3): Reconciliation as a Socio-Political Struggle
You can also find my writings in a (more or less) regular column in the print edition of Catholic Family News, as well as on Catholic Exchange, the blog of Sophia Institute Press.

FYI, the link for "Salvation of Righteous Pagans in the Poem Erkenwald" is messed up. The beginning "S" has the link to the poem, but for some reason the rest of the link is a link to the post itself (i.e. it just reloads the Christ the King post again)
ReplyDeleteThanks for letting me know I think it is fixed now : ))
DeleteYour industry is impressive
ReplyDeleteI especially loved your Confession Series at NLM
The V2 Council was a revolution ( It overturned the then existing order) but few understand that and fewer still are willing to admit that
God bless you
Thank you! I have at least two more coming in that series, but they take a really long time to research and write so it takes a bit of time : ) Thanks for your support.
